Oprah Looking for Polies
Oprah currently has an open call on her website for people in a serious relationship with more than one person. Perhaps of interest to some--bless her heart for trying:

Hope all are well!

Hancock is a poly movie.

Also, a fun comic-book action-hero movie.

Party reminder!
Here we are, just a wee eight hours from party time, and it, as always,
looks like a fabulous crowd will be making it out. The final RSVP list is
solidly in the 50s, maybe approaching the 60s! Fantabulous, I tell ya.
Looks like we'll even have a few out-of-towners reaching from the coast to
the Triad and all the way from Atlanta!

I'll be doing email checks thoughout the day and will do a final one
probably around 7pm just as things start revving up. So, if you think you
*might* be able to make it or are even just thinking about the option, do
drop me a line so I can get you directions asap.

As a reminder...*everyone* is very much welcome! Everybody on the list,
poly-friendly folks you feel like bringing along, kids (I think we have 4
or 5 coming along so far), newbies to the list/community, or any of all
y'all old folks, too. ;) It's sure to be a lovely night with plenty of
wonderful food and drink (including some tasty mulled wine), good company,
holiday cheer and (hopefully) the breaking-in of our fire pit on the deck
so folks can enjoy the outdoors without catching too much chill.

Questions, comments, last minute RSVPs...drop me and email!

Would the people who got books at the Starbuck's RPG last night check to see if our credit slips from the Bookstore and Nice Price Books are still in one of them?

If y'all don't have 'em, someone who was at the Really Really Free Market is really, really happy.

(Cross-posted to NCPoly and my personal journal)

Well, it's been a while. So it's time again. :)

Mark your calendars for a party on Saturday, 2/23. Most of you probably
know the drill. Fun for the whole family, starting at 7pm and going until
we throw folks out which might be anywhere from about midnight to 4 AM if
history repeats itself. Bring munchies to share if you wish. Bring
drinks to share if you wish. But mostly just bring yourself, partners,
kids, families, etc. RSVPs always *highly* encouraged just so we know how
many munchies and beverages we should have to start off the night.

(And as an aside/another reason to party other than "it's been a while",
I'll be taking the NCLEX (licensing exam for nurses) a week from today.
So, by then I'll have the results. I will either have passed and want to
celebrate, or will have failed and will need to drink myself silly before
I start re-studying. Either way...a party will be exactly what I need.

More details will be posted soon, especially for the benefit of new-ish
folks, but we at least wanted to get word out so folks could start marking
off their calendars. :)

I was ignorant of this bit of historical information.  Apparently polyandry was a common lifestyle in Tibet and Nepal among Buddhists.

It is still practiced in some areas of Nepal and India, but has been outlawed by the Chinese in Tibet, due to their population control edicts.

And thought I would post it here to tease you, though it looks more grayish/purplish than the photo---at least to me it does. Meh, what do I know?

Sex and Culture, book discussion group
On November 1, 2007 we will be discussing Naked on the Internet: Hookups, Downloads and Cashing in on Internet Sexploitation, by Audacia Ray.  In it, Ray explores the role the internet has played in women's sexual exploration and expression as well as the role women have had in building a sexual space on the internet.

The Sex and Culture book discussion group meets once a month to discuss readings on social, political, and cultural aspects of sexuality and gender. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month from 6:30-8:00pm at Internationalist Books at 405 W. Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Come to any or all of the groups. RSVP not necessary but appreciated, and there is no charge for participating.

Future book groups will discuss:

December 6, 2007: The Erotic Mind: Unlocking the Inner Sources of Passion and Fulfillment, by Jack Morin, PhD

January 3, 2008: The Ethical Slut: A guide to infinite sexual possibilities, by Dossie Easton and Catherine A. Liszt

Pimp out TPN!
Yesterday mary_mayhem, celtfiddler, veracity1, my sweetie and I got together for coffee and discussed some ways we might recruit more cool folks to TPN.  One of the things we talked about was putting a link to NC Poly (http://www.openweave.org/NCPoly/) into our profiles on places like Poly Match Maker, OKCupid, and Poly Friend Finder.  If people see that you are a member, they might get inspired to join as well.  Why is this a good thing to do?  Why take the time to pimp out TPN?  Cause the bigger the group is, the bigger the dating pool, and that is good, yea?

Go ye therefore and pimp.

Weekend Ruminations

This will be the first weekend in almost three months, that I will not be in the Mebane/Triangle area.  My sweetie

d_p_rackhamis entertaining her long distance sweetiejackolantern, who gets in this evening form Illinois.  We are are all getting together in Greensboro tomorrow night for dinner and coffee.  I look forward to meeting him, since he has been in her life for about three years now.  I am excited for them both, since they don't get to spend much time together due to the distance.

I am going to West Virginia to visit my sister for her birthday and taking the luscious chocolate Kalua cake I won at the TPN fundraiser silent auction, being baked by who else but d_p_rackham.  *licking chops at the prospect*

I also had the wonderful opportunity to meet the younger sister and two nephews of d_p_rackhamlast evening as they were passing through to the beach.  What a delightful family, and I look forward to meeting the rest.

Anyway, I will miss seeing all my new friends this weekend and especially the TPN meeting on Sunday, but will be glad to see my sis, who I haven't seen since last 4th of July.  I am truly thankful for being welcomed into this community in such a loving way.

I was asked to post some of the topics we discussed at the last TPN concerning legal issues in the Poly world and more specifically in that area of partnered, married or multi-partnered long term relationships.

Real Estate:

-Survivorship - automatic if married at the time the property is acquired.  The property would pass to the surviving spouse outside of probate requirements.

-Joint Tenancy - unmarried or individuals would own in equal shares and the share of the deceased individual would be subject to probate.  Unmarried individuals who buy property before they get married do not create the survivorship interest simply by getting married.  A new deed would be required.

-Other Legal Entities:

-Family Revocable Living Trust - A good option if there are minor children involved in the relationship whose interests need protecting.

-Family or Relationship LLC - Probably a good option for a co-housing situation with multiple partners or a network.

Other Assets or Property:

-Relationship Agreement/Contract - (like Pre or Postnuptual) - A good way to handle household possesions and other personal property brought into a partnered, but not married relationship.  Basically just a contract between the parties.

-Revocable Living Trust - Basically the same as above that includes other non real estate assets.

-Family or Relationship LLC - The same reasons as above.

-Wills - Needed regardless of Living Trust.  Not all assets will normally be in the trust.

   -Wills (designation of legal guardian)

-Family LLC (children can be members)

   -Visitation issues

Powers of Attorney:

-Durable - Can be as limited or all encompassing as you wish to make it.

-Medical - Unmarried SO’s have limited rights without one when it comes to hospital visitation, etc.

I am available for questions, but would prefer to get them outside of the comments here.

Anybody up for sushi at Shiki Sushi before RPG on June 22? They do "buy one, get one" and the most expensive roll is $11.95.

Shiki is on Hwy 54 on the other side of I-40 from Southpoint Mall. Very easy access and handy to RPG.
